This solitaire is off the rails, set with a giant gorgeous 12x9mm Old Mine Cut glitter-bomb of a moissanite.

The design is Japanese peach blossoms with a couple little honeybees scattered here and there. We wanted to keep the setting as open as possible, yet have the solitaire frame be substantial enough to securely hold such a large stone. A strong, delicate type, let’s say.

This photo actually shows one of the signature characteristics of a moissanite: the stone is doubly refractive, which means that it splits light into two rays. You can see it from certain angles only; with faceted stones, it’s usually if you view the stone through the crown facets (you can see here the facet edges across the stone are doubled). For this reason, moissanite is always oriented specifically when cutting so that when viewing the stone face-up, you see no doubling and the facet lines are crisp and perfect. Only from the sides do you begin to see it.

This is one of my favorite angles of this ring: the view of the stone pavilion through the openwork of the bezel. And the little diamond guy is a sweet bonus 🙂
